Jason And The Scorchers
This country/rock 'n' roll styled US band was formed by Jason Ringenberg (b. 22 November 1958, Kewanee, Illinois, USA; vocals, guitar, harmonica) who left his parents' farm in Sheffield, Illinois in 1981 to travel to Nashville. There he teamed up with Warner Hodges (b. 4 June 1959, Nashville, Tennessee, USA; guitar) and Jeff Johnson (b. Nashville, Tennessee, USA; bass). Another original member was Jack Emerson, who went on to become the band's manager. Hodges' parents provided the band's pedigree, having been country musicians who toured with Johnny Cash. The band recruited Peter Baggs (b. 22 March 1962, Nashville, Tennessee, USA; drums) and became Jason And The Nashville Scorchers, with the prefix later dropped, playing fast country rock ("cowpunk' was the description coined in the UK). Their first EP for the Praxis label was 1982"s Reckless Country Soul (USA only), followed by the mini-album Fervor a year later. This brought them well-deserved attention in the press and was subsequently re-released in 1984 on EMI Records. It was notable for the inclusion of Bob Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie", while a subsequent single tackled the Rolling Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown". Lost & Found included a cover version of Hank Williams' "Lost Highway"; the combination of these three tracks gives a useful insight into the band's influences and sound.
