Ulver
With their modern take on Norwegian black metal, Ulver dispense with much of the genre's Satanic cliches, focusing on pagan and Viking themes and evolving a cerebral, almost intellectual air. Formed in the early 90s by vocalist Garm (b. Krisoffer Rygg), guitarists Haavard and Aismal, bass player Skoll and drummer Aiwarikiar, Ulver named themselves after the Norwegian word for "wolves" and have based many of their records to date on a philosophical concept. For example, Bergtatt (1995) came from a Norse legend concerning mythical creatures, Kveldssanger (1996) was a collection of acoustic devotional music, and Nattens Madrigal (1997) took the theme of wolves to a higher plane. Their 1999 release tackled the apocalyptic work of William Blake. Ulver remain one of the most unusual bands of this type.
