Born and raised in New York, and a graduate in journalism, Jeff Wayne studied at the famous Juilliard School of Music in New York. In the early 60s he was a member of the group the Sandpipers, although not at the time they had their worldwide hit with "Guantanamera'. Wayne also worked as an arranger for the Righteous Brothers before coming to London in 1966. He studied at Trinity College of Music, after which his ambition was to write and stage a musical based on Charles Dickens" A Tale Of Two Cities (the lyrics were written by his father, Jerry Wayne). Starring Edward Woodward, the project finally made the stage in 1969, by which time Wayne had started to establish himself as a jingle writer. In the late 60s and early 70s he was responsible for some of the best known television advertising slogans and tunes such as "McDougal's Flour - so fine it flows through the fingers". Wayne then became involved with the career of the singer and actor David Essex and produced most of his early hits as well as acting as his musical director on tour.
