finetune artist: Pelican

Originating from Chicago, Illinois, USA, the seeds of art-metal instrumentalists Pelican were planted in noisecore outfit Tusk. Formed in the middle of 1998, Tusk featured Laurent Lebec (guitar), Trevor DeBrauw (guitar) and Larry Herweg (drums). Issuing two releases (a self-titled 2001 split EP with fellow Chicago noise specialists Hewhocorrupts, and the 2002 album, Get Ready), Tusk's studio output is best described as in the same vein of extreme bands such as Lightning Bolt and Arab On Radar. Looking to take the noise level down a notch and concentrate on heavier, and slower compositions (citing Black Sabbath, Godflesh and Earth as prime musical role models), the trio invited Lebec's younger brother, Bryan, to provide bass, and soon afterwards Pelican was formed. The quartet's cheaply recorded demo turned out so well that they released it as their first recording, the four-track EP Pelican. Recorded almost entirely live, the EP was reissued by Hydra Head, the label run by Aaron Turner of the similarly styled Isis. Pelican supported the release by touring as part of the Champions Of Sound road show. Just a few months later, Pelican's album debut, the near hour-long Australasia, was issued. With Parker overseeing the recording once more, the quartet adopted a different approach during the sessions, with both guitarists overdubbing their parts after the rhythm section had recorded the basic tracks. The combination of two strong guitarists each contributing equally is unusual, yet the results are highly satisfying.
