Boy Least Likely To
Growing up in the quiet English village of Wendover in Buckinghamshire, multi-instrumentalist Pete Hobbs and singer Jof Owen first met at school and later played in bands together at college. A number of years elapsed before the duo reunited in the new millennium and started working together again, writing and recording songs on a basic home studio set-up. These eight-track recordings formed the basis for the Boy Least Likely To, the name a nod to 80s indie favourites the Smiths. Hobbs and Owen set up their own Too Young To Die label as an outlet for their music, self-releasing the "Paper Cuts" 7-inch single in 2003. The duo's whimsical indie pop complemented lyrics concerning the loss of innocence and regression to childhood pleasures to escape the adult world. The cover art, featuring a simple line drawing, maintained the air of unsophisticated charm. The singles "Fur Soft As Fur" and "Be Gentle With Me" followed over the next two years as Hobbs and Owen built up a strong word-of-mouth reputation on the indie scene. The Boy Least Likely To's debut, The Best Party Ever, compiled the first three singles plus five new tracks.
