Tommy Flanagan
b. 16 March 1930, Detroit, Michigan, USA, d. 16 November 2001, New York City, New York, USA. Flanagan began playing piano as a child, following a brief flirtation with the clarinet. His professional career began during his teenage while he was still living in his home town, then a thriving centre for bop. He worked with numerous visiting musicians, impressing them with his eclecticism and innate supportive gifts. In his mid-twenties he relocated to New York where he played at Birdland. From the mid-50s he continued his supportive role, working with instrumentalists and singers. The former included Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins. The singers included Tony Bennett and, principally, Ella Fitzgerald for whom Flanagan was accompanist for the greater part of the 60s and 70s.
