b. Pennsylvania, USA. This singer-songwriter has been pursuing his often wayward muse from his base in Tucson, Arizona for over three decades. The main outlet for his work has been Giant Sand, whose "desert rock" sound, with its mix of country, rock, and beatnik lyricism, is often cited as a key influence on many of the roots-orientated bands to emerge during the alternative country resurgence of the mid-90s. Gelb has always been keen to disassociate himself from any labels, however, and although his work began to crossover to a wider audience during the mid-90s he has resolutely refused to stray from his unique musical path.
