D.A.D.
Originally known as Disneyland After Dark, D.A.D. came together in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1985. Comprising Jesper Binzer (vocals, guitar), Jacob A. Binzer (guitar), Stig Pedersen (bass) and Peter L. Jensen (drums), they combined cowpunk and high-energy metallic rock 'n' roll with an irreverent sense of humour, reminiscent of Cheap Trick and ZZ Top at their playful best. After two entertaining and musically competent albums on the independent Mega label, they were signed by Warner Brothers Records in 1989 (reputedly for over $1,000,000) and marketed as their "next big thing'. Their energetic and eccentric live performances were highly impressive, with scenarios including exploding helmets and instruments, but they failed to generate similar intensity in the studio. Consequently, No Fuel Left For The Pilgrims did not live up to the label's advance promotion. Riskin" It All emerged in 1991 and proved that the band had not been disillusioned by the press backlash. It was, instead, an excellent hard rock album, sparkling with offbeat energy and their own peculiar, tongue-in-cheek style. Helpyourselfish was released in 1995 after "two and a half years in a rehearsal room", according to Binzen. Song titles such as "(Naked) But Still Stripping" and "It's When It's Wrong It's Right" continued the band's penchant for more bizarre themes. When Binzon reasoned "We're toning the circus part down," he soon put the statement in context: "But Stig has a new bass like an olive with a toothpick stuck through it. He'll also have a bass stand shaped like a martini glass, and be dressed as a Spanish bullfighter."
