Teairra Mari
b. Teairra Mari Thomas, Detroit, Michigan, USA. This Detroit-based R&B singer came to prominence in summer 2005 with her debut single "Make Her Feel Good". Mari began performing in her church at an early age and had already scored a local radio hit ("You Thought") by the time she reached her early teens. She carried on recording demos in the hope of attracting major label interest, but despite releasing an EP through a local label had to wait until she was 16 before linking up with the Atlanta-based MusicLine Entertainment production company. With the backing of MusicLine her career began to gather speed, and in July 2004 Mari signed a recording contract with the Island Def Jam Group. Mari teamed up with rap svengali Jay-Z, newly installed as the President of the Def Jam Group, and hit songwriters and producers including Rodney Jerkins, Kwam‚ and Sean Garrett to work on tracks for her debut album. One of the first songs the team completed was "Make Her Feel Good", a sassy mid-tempo urban anthem featuring a prominent sample of Eric B. And Rakim's rap classic "My Melody". The single reached the US Top 40 in summer 2005 and set the stage for the release of Mari's debut album in August.
