One of modern soul's most successful duos, comprising husband and wife team Cecil Womack (b. Cleveland, Ohio, USA) and Linda Cooke Womack. Cecil had been the youngest of the Womack Brothers, who later evolved into the Valentinos. With them, he signed to Sam Cooke's Star imprint, but Cooke's subsequent death left them homeless, and after a brief liaison with Chess Records, Bobby Womack left the group to go solo. Cecil later married singer Mary Wells, whom he managed until the couple separated. Linda, the daughter of Sam Cooke, had begun a songwriting career in 1964 at the age of 11, composing "I Need A Woman". She would also provide "I'm In Love" for Wilson Pickett and "A Woman's Gotta Have It" for James Taylor, but later forged a professional, and personal, partnership with Cecil. As she recalls: "My father had the deepest regard for all the Womack brothers. He had talked about how talented Cecil was since I was four years old . . . We didn't actually meet until I was eight". Together they worked extensively as a writing team for Philadelphia International Records, numbering the O'Jays and Patti LaBelle among their clients. The couple achieved a notable success with "Love TKO", a soul hit in 1980 for Teddy Pendergrass. This melodic ballad also provided the Womacks with their first US chart entry (and was also covered by Blondie), following which the duo's fortunes prospered both in the US and UK with several excellent singles, including the club favourite, "Love Wars" (1984) and "Teardrops" (1988), the latter reaching the UK Top 3. They continued to write for others also, contributing "Hurting Inside" and "Sexy" to Ruby Turner. In the early 90s the couple journeyed to Nigeria, where they discovered ancestral ties to the Zekkariyas tribe. They consequently adopted the names Zeriiya (Linda) and Zekkariyas (Cecil), in a nod to the Afrocentricity movement.
