Scary Kids Scaring Kids
Named after a track by influential early 90s emo band Cap'n Jazz, this Arizona, USA-based post-hardcore unit was formed in 2002 by college friends Tyson Stevens (vocals/bass), Chad Crawford (guitar/vocals), DJ Wilson (guitar) and Peter Costa (drums). Instrumental duties were rejigged following the addition of Steve Kirby (guitar) and Pouyan Afkary (keyboards), with Wilson switching to bass. The self-released After Dark EP attracted some interest around their native Arizona, but the members were on the point of resuming college when the Los Angeles independent Immortal Records contacted them with a view to re-releasing the EP. A contract was signed and the quintet resumed live work. The EP helped introduce the band's twin guitar and keyboards approach, which was an unusual set-up in hardcore circles. Released in 2005 by Immortal, The City Sleeps In Flames was adorned with cover art referencing both the 9/11 attacks and the final scene of the movie Fight Club. The album received encouraging reviews, with particular praise bestowed on the guitar work of Crawford and Kirby.
