Open Hand
Formed in 1999 by Justin Isham (vocals/guitar, ex-I Awake), Michael Anastasi (bass) and Alex Rodr¡guez (drums), this California, USA-based indie rock band endured an eventful career in its early years. The trio released two limited edition EPs via its own label, 1999's Evolution and 2000's Radio Days, which showcased a move away from their roots in the Californian hardcore scene towards a cleaner alternative rock sound. The band's new label Trustkill Records later compiled the EPs on 2003's critically acclaimed The Dream. The band was put on hiatus the same year when Anastasi suddenly decided to quit. Drummer Rodr¡guez subsequently departed to join Saosin, leaving Isham as the sole remaining founding member. The line-up that recorded the band's ambitious album debut, 2005's You And Me, comprised the core duo of Isham and new drummer Paxton Pryor, with additional vocals from Hayley Helmericks, Allen Epley and Katy Arnovich, and contributions from Anastasi, Rodr¡guez and guitarist Sean Woods. Keyboard player and vocalist Breanne Martin joined the line-up following the release of the album, but further personnel change meant that Isham was the only original member remaining by the start of the following year. (NB: Not to be confused with the Boston-based jazz jam band of the same name.)
