CLOR
Clor create synth-driven punk funk with a progressive rock aesthetic resulting in a very individual sound. Although they came from different backgrounds, Luke Smith (b. Chelmsford, Essex, England; guitar), Barry Dobbin (b. Kilcaldy, Eire; guitar/vocals), Rob Earland (b. Chelmsford, Essex, England; keyboards), Harry Bennett (b. London, England; drums) and Max Taylor (b. London, England; bass) met up in south London. Dobbin and Smith were running a club night called "Bad Bunny" which was attracting many fledgling bands and gaining underground kudos at the same time. The rest of the band (some of who were already in the live band for UK rapper Roots Manuva), were regulars at the club, and they bonded over obscure musical tastes at the start of 2003. The band quickly perfected their arty brand of pomp rock, and after only six gigs released their first EP Welcome Music Lovers in summer 2004, on Parlophone Records. By now there was a huge buzz surrounding the band, and they were being touted as the next Franz Ferdinand in many musical circles. The singles "Love + Pain" and "Outlines" were released in summer 2005, both containing interesting remixes and gaining dance floor respect in more discerning nightclubs. In July 2005 their self-titled album was released on Regal Records. The UK newspaper the Evening Standard provided an excellent summary: "Melodically sophisticated, brilliantly produced and packed with energy . . . derivative pop has never sounded so good."
