Cibelle
b. Cibelle Cavalli Bastos, 1978, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Unusually, singer-songwriter Cibelle cites San Francisco, USA-based sampling duo and Bjrk-collaborators Matmos among her inspirations, alongside more expected names such as Nina Simone, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Ella Fitzgerald. Matmos have constructed records from the sound of wet latex T-shirts, plastic surgery and amplified crayfish synapses and Cibelle echoed this use of found sound on "Waiting", a track from her 2003 debut album. The song was recorded after a visit to a supermarket where the musician taped the sounds of cash registers and refrigerators, sounds that were subsequently utilized by her collaborator Apollo 9. For the most part, however, Cibelle would seem to fit more closely in a lineage of classy Brazilian songwriting luminaries.
