An Pierle
b. 1974, Antwerp, Belgium. Pierle - pronounced "peer-LAY" - apparently grew up listening to unfashionable French and Flemish holiday music such as Jean-Jacques Goldman and Mylene Farmer, her literate and slightly enigmatic music has more overt precedents in artists such as PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Nick Cave and Tori Amos. Pierle's first release, however, was a cover of Tubeway Army's "Are Friends Electric?" that was a hit in the singer's home country and was more widely available on the Numan tribute album, Random. After studying at Antwerp's Studio Herman Teirlinck music and theatre school, Pierle had earned a place (with her interpretation of the Numan song) as a finalist at Humo's Rock Rally, a large talent contest that has previously been won by bands such as dEUS and Soulwax. Before recording an album, however, Pierle toured as an actress in the play Bernadetje and appeared in the television series Moeder, Waarom Leven Wij?.
