Engineers
This London, England-based quartet was formed by Simon Phipps (b. 29 December 1974, Basildon, Essex, England; vocals/guitar), Mark Peters (b. 21 July 1975, Liverpool, England; vocals/guitar). Dan Macbean (b. September 1973, Salford, Greater Manchester, England; guitar/keyboards) and Andrew Sweeney (b. November 1972, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England; drums). Engineers came together when Phipps, based in London, was put in contact with Peters, Macbean and Sweeney, who were in a Wigan-based band already on the verge of signing a recording contract. The completed unit eventually fell into place, with each member inspired by each other's obvious compatibility, and they signed to independent label Echo in December 2002. In September 2004, their debut EP, Folly, was released, which featured six strong tracks including two that would feature on their debut album, as well as a credible cover version of Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter". The quartet's self-titled debut album reached the shelves in March 2005, and although there was relatively little hype surrounding its release, there was a widespread recognition of their musical ability and potential, which they exploited to full effect on stand-out tracks such as "Home", "Forgiveness", and the blissfully uplifting "Come In Out Of The Rain". Strong influences from Talk Talk's Spirit Of Eden were in evidence, but with a more guitar-based rock sound. From the same mould as contemporary bands such as Doves and Elbow, the quartet's blend of synthesized electronic sounds with big drumbeats, choir-like vocals and powerful orchestral arrangements also recalled Spiritualized and the Beta Band.
