The Escape Club
A quartet of Trevor Steel (vocals), John Holliday (guitar), Johnnie Christo (bass) and Milan Zekavica (drums), the Escape Club took their central influence from the glam rock era of T. Rex and David Bowie. Formed in Essex, England, in 1983, they signed to EMI Records after the release of their first single, "Breathing", for Bright Records. Afterwards they played regularly at the Marquee Club and supported China Crisis and the Alarm on tour. However, several singles and a debut album for EMI failed to provide a breakthrough. The band alleged "under-promotion" by EMI and ended their association. That decision was rewarded when they found huge if fleeting success in the USA for Atlantic Records. Their single, "Wild Wild West" became a surprise Billboard number 1 hit in 1988, accompanying an album of the same title, which also achieved gold sales. However, that was the end of their commercial good fortune and further efforts failed to penetrate the American charts.
