Possum Dixon
Possum Dixon are from the "coffee house scene" of Los Angeles, California, USA. Named after a fugitive spotted on the US television programme America's Most Wanted, the group have earned a good deal of international support based on their rangy, expressive musicianship and lyrics, and have been compared to the Talking Heads, XTC and the Violent Femmes. Robert Zabrecky (b. 1969, USA; vocals, bass) helped set up the Jabber Jaw club in the late 80s, which showcased local bands, as well as an unannounced Nirvana gig. Recruiting band members from this scene, Robert O'Sullivan (guitar, keyboards), Celso Chavez (guitar), and Byron Reynolds (drums), Zabrecky started to assemble the band and they released three independent singles. They eventually signed a contract with Interscope Records. Zabrecky described their music thus: "There's a side that's experimental music, a stream of consciousness, trying to mix poetry, bullshit, abusive relationships, drugs, sex and coffee, things like that." Songs such as "We're All Happy" tackled the problem of a woman who came to vibrators late in life and overdosed on the resultant happiness they brought her. Better still was the single "Watch That Girl Destroy Me", produced by Earle Mankey, which followed acclaimed support slots to Compulsion in London. Although their second album was of similar quality to their first Zabrecky preferred it, stating in Spin magazine: "I love it more than the first one, because it reminds me how we made it through this fucked-up year. We'll never forget that".
