Puffy AmiYumi
Comprising Ami Onuki (b. 18 September 1973, Tokyo, Japan) and Yumi Yoshimura (b. 30 January 1975, Osaka, Japan), Puffy AmiYumi formed in 1995 when Onuki and Yoshimura both entered a talent search, that resulted in a recording contract with Sony Records. Without knowing each other previously, the two women were paired up, and it quickly became apparent that their voices complemented one another perfectly. A year later, the duo issued their debut single, "Asia No Junshin", a smash hit that sold over a million copies. "Puffy mania" soon took hold, as fans began to copy the way the duo dressed (old T-shirts and ripped jeans). Albums soon followed, including the bestselling Jet and Fever*Fever, and their first US release, Spike, which earned the duo comparisons to Abba and the Electric Light Orchestra by the American music press.
