Colin Hay
b. 29 June 1953, Kilwinning, Scotland. This singer-songwriter moved to Australia in his early teens. He formed Men At Work with Ron Strykert in 1978 and enjoyed a string of international hits in the early 80s with catchy pop singles including "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under'. After the break-up of Men At Work in 1985, Hay launched a solo career with the middling pop rock collection Looking For Jack. The album's commercial failure precipitated the ending of Hay's association with Columbia Records. He signed a new contract with MCA Records and assembled the Colin Hay Band, featuring Gerry Hale (violin/mandolin), Paul Gadsby (bass) and Robert Dillon (drums). The quartet completed the excellent Wayfaring Sons in 1990, on which Hay's songwriting focus shifted from new wave and pop rock to folk and Celtic music with pleasing effect. The acoustic follow-up, Peaks & Valleys, dabbled in white reggae, while 1994's Topanga and 1998"s Transcendental Highway found Hay crafting his most consistent collections since Men At Work's heyday.
