finetune artist: Bedouin Soundclash

Jay Malinowski (b. 1982, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; vocals/guitar), Eon Sinclair (b. 1981; bass) and Pat Pengelly (drums) make up this Canadian-based trio. Taking their name from an album by Israeli dub artist Badawi, Bedouin Soundclash formed in Kingston, Ontario, while the members were attending Queen's University and discovering musical common ground in their mutual love for reggae music. With a simple combination of guitar, bass, drums and Malinowski's understated but heartfelt vocals, they set about forging a brand of music that is primarily reggae-influenced but incorporates elements of ska, soul and rock. Obvious influences include Bob Marley, the Clash, the Police and the Specials, but the Bedouin Soundclash sound is distinctively original while remaining true to its roots. The trio self-released their debut, Root Fire, in 2001 before Stomp Records approached them to reissue it. For the 2004 follow-up, Sounding A Mosaic, they recruited producer Darryl Jennifer of American hardcore punk band Bad Brains, and earned a worldwide release with SideOneDummy Records. The album, which had a more pop-based, feel-good vibe, included the single "When The Night Feels My Song", which proved a major breakthrough, achieving massive success in Canada, and also earning recognition in the UK, largely owing to it appearing in a television commercial for T-Mobile. On the back of this success the trio released Street Gospels in August 2007, a similarly upbeat album, which was received well critically and achieved healthy commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic.
