X
Though they came up in the early-'80s California punk scene, X presented an alternative to the jackhammer onslaught of hardcore punk. They combined Billy Zoom's '50s rock & roll-influenced guitar work with some rootsy touches and a fair amount amount of poetic imagery. The vocal blend of John Doe and Exene Cervenka, the Sonny and Cher of postpunk, was their calling card, and their unique, intelligent songs were the payoff.
