Vernon Reid
b. 22 August 1958, London, England. Formerly the lead singer and guitarist with US rock band Living Colour, Reid founded a new solo venture, titled Masque, in 1996. His debut solo album, Mistaken Identity, featured the full Masque band, while the bizarre choice of co-producers included hip-hop guru Prince Paul and jazz legend Teo Macero. The album represented his artistic rebirth after 10 years on the road with Living Colour, who disbanded in 1995. As Reid told Rolling Stone, "Doing this album represents freedom for me. But freedom, as we know, is a responsibility. And part of what that responsibility calls me to do is not edit out what I'm feeling and thinking - and not to let anxiety and worry and market concerns infect the process." Among the best tracks on view on this highly eclectic album were "Lightnin'", a tribute to Lightnin' Hopkins, and the dancehall reggae of "Freshwater Coconut".
