The Samples
Unconnected to the early 80s UK punk band of the same name, this indie-rock quartet was formed in Boulder, Colorado, USA, in 1989. Led by singer Sean Kelly, the group made its debut in their year of inception with a self-titled collection released by the New York-based Just Records. After sales of 5,000 it was picked up for wider distribution by Arista Records. When Arista dropped the band they, and their debut album, moved to a third home, What Are Records? The group recorded three more sets for that label, including 1994's acclaimed Autopilot. Then, in an unusual turnaround, they moved from an independent to a major record label for the second time. By now the group had built a substantial local and national following for their sophisticated pop-rock. Their first release for Atlantic Records, the enchanting single, "The Lost Children (A Slow Motion Crash)", brought them ever closer to the mainstream rock scene.
