Scarlet
This acoustic band were formed in Hull, Humberside, and belong in the tradition of Marine Girls and Everything But The Girl, also from that city. They crashed into the charts in 1995 with the treacly "Independent Love Song", although the suddenness of their arrival did not reflect the length of pianist Joe Youle's and singer Cheryl Parker's (both b. c.1971) apprenticeship. Seven years previously they had consulted Paul Heaton (then leader of the Housemartins) over the quality of two songs they had composed. He apparently said: "If only my first song had been as good as this, but one of you can sing and one of you can't." However, he left the duo to make up their minds about to whom this comment was directed. Eventually, Youle concentrated solely on the keyboard, and the duo contacted Gary Crowley at Island Records. Six years later they approached him again on his first day in a new A&R post at Warner Brothers Records, and he signed them. Songs on their debut album ran the gamut of relationship issues, with men in particular given short shrift for their insensitivities and improprieties, notably on the track about an MP's "love child", "Man In A Cage". Not to be confused with the USA hardcore band from Virginia with the same name.
