Russell Malone
b. 8 November 1963, Albany, Georgia, USA. Malone began playing guitar at the age of four and by six had taught himself to play a solo from a record by the Dixie Hummingbirds. Raised in a small town, he heard only a little jazz but a lot of gospel and blues. He played in church but it was televised appearances by B.B. King and George Benson that encouraged his move into music as a profession. At age 12, Malone spent hard-earned pocket money on a Benson album, moving on from there to hear, and learn from, records by Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt. His explorations of jazz guitar history found him also listening to lesser-known artists such as Dick McDonough, Carl Kress and Bernard Addison.
