Richard Julian
b. 13 June 1967, Austin, Texas, USA. This Arden, Delaware-raised singer-songwriter was still in his teens when he arrived in New York City in the late 80s after a stint as a precocious lounge pianist in Las Vegas. Quickly finding his place in the local crop of troubadours, he spent the 90s perfecting his craft and releasing some of the finest work to come out of that era's singer-songwriter scene. His early work did not garner the attention it deserved, but Julian's career gained momentum after Norah Jones moved to New York and turned the town upside down. Julian co-wrote several tracks on her bestselling second album, 2004's Feels Like Home, and they also collaborated together as part of the alt country band the Little Willies. He had already released three strong albums full of melodically inventive folk rock with a poetic, razor sharp lyrical sensibility, but his collaborations with Jones helped him find a new home on her parent label EMI Records. His 2006 release, Slow New York, included vocal contributions from Jones, and the 2008 follow-up, Sunday Morning In Saturday's Shoes, was overseen by veteran producer Mitchell Froom. Both releases found Julian utilizing a sparser, acoustic-orientated framework, but simultaneously propelling his songwriting to ever ascending heights, alternating moments of fragile beauty with sardonic humour.
