Lost Tribe
This band from New York City, USA, escape easy categorization, their armoury spanning funk, soul, hardcore punk and hip-hop. "Our music is a reflection of who we are, where we live, and what we've been through. That has an effect on the kind of music we play. It's a very intense environment." Comprising David Benney (alto saxophone), Fima Ephron (bass), David Gilmore (guitar), Ben Perowsky (drums) and Adam Rogers (guitar), each contributes to the band's songwriting platform, bringing diverse personal influences to bear. Lost Tribe began by jamming in local New York clubs and Central Park, with members involved in sundry side projects. It was not until 1988 that the core of the band was cemented when Ephron, Perowsky and Rogers decided to put previous collaborations on a more permanent footing. By 1989, Binney and Gilmore had cemented the line-up. By this time members had amassed considerable and varying experience playing with John Cale, George Russell, Meshell Ndeg‚ocello, Roy Ayers, Steve Coleman, Rickie Lee Jones and Walter Becker, among others. The latter produced their self-titled debut album at his Maui studio. This mesh of contrasting influences was quickly followed by Soulfish a year later. This time working with Joseph Marciano at Brooklyn's Systems Two enclave, guests included Benny Nitze and Joe Mendelson of Rise Robots Rise, with whom Ephron, Rogers and Gilmore had formerly participated. Soulfish duly included several memorable songs, not least Perowsky's "Daze Of Ol'" and Rogers' "Steel Orchards".
