Lina
b. Denver, Colorado, USA. Although it is understandable that many will classify singer Lina as a modern R&B artist at first glance, upon closer inspection, both her music and vocal approach contain elements of other musical styles, especially jazz. Lina was raised in several different Texas towns, during which time she started singing with her mother in a local church choir. She began discovering other musical styles, and developed her vocal talents even further by entering local singing competitions. Although she thoroughly studied soul and Motown Records singers including Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder, Lina developed a love of 30s and 40s-era jazz and swing artists (especially Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington). Additionally, Lina began writing her own compositions, and after relocating to Los Angeles, California, was able to make some important industry connections as a songwriter for established artists. Lina had a breakthrough when a song she co-wrote, "Ain't Nothin' Like A Jones', appeared on Tyrese" successful debut in 1998. Despite a falling out with her manager at the time, Lina's career continued on the upswing, as she hooked up with songwriter Travis House, who encouraged the singer to write more jazz-orientated tunes. The advice worked, with Lina signing a solo recording contract with Atlantic Records and releasing the highly acclaimed Stranger On Earth in 2001.
