Fiction Plane
Melodic UK pop rock band formed in 1999 by Joe Sumner (vocals/guitar), Seton Daunt (guitar), Dan Brown (bass), and Olly Taylor (drums). Although the band's press releases made little of it, music critics instantly latched on to the fact that Sumner is the son of rock legend Sting. Influenced by everything from ska to grunge to folk, the band's original name was Santa's Boyfriend, and they played shows in both Europe and the USA and self-released a collection of demos, Swings And Roundabouts, under this name. In 2002, minus the departed Taylor, the remaining trio signed a recording contract with MCA Records and changed their name to Fiction Plane (which was the title of an early song of Sumner's). Renowned rock producer David Kahne agreed to help guide the young band through the recording of their debut album. Everything Will Never Be OK was recorded with session player Abe Laboriel Jnr. filling in the vacant drum position, before Pete Wilhoit signed on for the album's supporting tour. Sumner's lyrics eschewed the shrewd optimism of much of his father's work, with song titles including "Hate", "I Wish I Would Die", and "Everything Will Never Be OK".
