Cartel
This Atlanta, Georgia, USA-based pop punk band was formed in late 2003 by Will Pugh (b. 4 May 1984, Conyers, Georgia, USA; vocals), Joseph Pepper (guitar), Andy Lee (guitar), Ryan Roberts (bass) and Kevin Sanders (b. 9 October 1982, Dekalb County, Georgia, USA; drums). Pugh, Pepper and Sanders had previously worked together in Summer's Disregard. Cartel enjoyed a notably rapid rise to mainstream acceptance. They had built up a large fanbase within months of forming, and then completed the recording of their five-track debut EP with producer Matt Goldman. The Ransom EP was released independently in late 2004 before being picked up by the California based indie imprint The Militia Group, who re-released the EP with two extra tracks. To complete an eventful year, Nic Hudson replaced Lee before the band had had chance to begin work on their debut album. Released the following September, Chroma proved to be a solid collection of melodic emo pop with two notable stand-out tracks, "Say Anything (Else)" and "Honestly". The album was heavily hyped in the alternative rock press and led to a major label recording contract with Epic Records. The label subsequently re-released Chroma in June 2006. Ryan Roberts left the band the same month and was replaced by Jeff Lett (b. William Jeffrey Lett, 18 January 1980, Melbourne, Florida, USA).
