Bob Baldwin
b. 9 December 1960, Mount Vernon, New York, USA. Taught to play piano from the age of four by his father, Robert Baldwin Snr., a pianist and bass player, he was influenced by the recorded work of diverse artists, mainly from the jazz world, including Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Oscar Peterson, Patrice Rushen, his uncle Larry Willis, and Stevie Wonder. At Geneva College in Pennsylvania, Baldwin took a degree in Business Administration and later worked as a company accountant, but maintained his interest in developing a career in music and by the mid-80s had launched his career. After producing and marketing his debut album, A Long Way To Go, he gained contracts with other record companies, through which he brought his music to wide attention and in 1989 received the Sony Innovator in Music Award. Playing keyboards, Baldwin has attracted high praise from the smooth jazz audience. Among musicians with whom he has worked, many of them appearing on his recordings, are Gerald Albright, Roy Ayers, Tom Browne, Larry Coryell, Will Downing, Chuck Loeb, Marion Meadows (with whom he toured for four years), Nelson Rangell, Lonnie Liston Smith, Grover Washington Jnr. and Kim Waters.
