b. Annette Funicello, 22 October 1942, Utica, New York, USA. Initially billed as "Annette", this singer/actress rose to fame under the aegis of the Walt Disney organization. A one-time Mousketeer - the last of the original group who appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club - she enjoyed several hit singles between 1959 and 1961 which included two US Top 10 entries, "Tall Paul" and "O Dio Mio", as well as the enduring "Pineapple Princess". During the 60s Annette starred alongside Frankie Avalon in a series of "quickie" beach films, including Beach Party, Bikini Beach (both 1964) and How To Stuff A Wild Bikini (1965), which combined slim plots, teenage themes and cameos from pop stars. The Monkey's Uncle (1964) drew its appeal from an appearance by the Beach Boys and musical contributions from their leader, Brian Wilson. The latter assisted songwriter/producer Gary Usher in creating material for Muscle Beach Party, Annette's strongest album, which also featured back-up from the all-female group the Honeys. She later appeared in the Monkees' cult film Head (1968), but subsequently devoted more time to her growing family, making occasional personal appearances, television commercials, and guest shots in series such as Hondo, Love-American Style, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Full House, and Frasier. In 1987 she and Avalon returned to the big screen in Back To The Beach, an amusing spoof of their earlier successes together. Five years later, after revealing that she had been fighting multiple sclerosis, the actress formed The Annette Funicello Teddy Bear Company and introduced the perfume "Cello, by Annette". A percentage of the profits from the latter line go to the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases. The tribute programme, A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes: The Annette Funicello Story, aired on US television in 1995.
