Amanda Ghost
b. London, England. This singer-songwriter, raised in north London of Spanish and Indian descent, made a notable impression in 2001 with her debut Ghost Stories. Ghost first began performing while studying at the London College of Fashion, creating a favourable impression on the city's tight-knit club scene. She formed a songwriting and performing partnership with Ian Dench (ex-EMF), remixer Lucas Barton and keyboard player Sacha Skarbek, and signed a worldwide recording contract with Warner Brothers Records. Although Ghost Stories opens with the strident industrial leanings of "Filthy Mind", the downbeat lyrics and mix of folk-based melodies and club beats on the following tracks placed Ghost firmly in Beth Orton territory. Lack of record company support for the album stymied Ghost's budding major label career, and she was forced to employ legal help to extricate herself from the Warners deal. She continued to work with Dench and a rhythm section in a "band" format, with a number of new recordings appearing through the artist's own website. Ghost achieved notable success in 2005 as the co-writer of James Blunt's worldwide hit, "You're Beautiful".
