Missy Higgins
b. Melissa Morrison Higgins, 19 August 1983, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Singer-songwriter and pianist/guitarist Higgins rose quickly to prominence in her home country with a string of hit singles taken from her platinum-selling 2004 debut. Three years previously she had been finishing her exams and singing in her brother's band during her spare time. After taking time out to backpack around Europe, her first big break came when she won a songwriting competition sponsored by the government-funded radio station Triple J, which led directly to a recording contract with John Watson's Eleven label. Higgins released her self-titled debut EP, featuring the Triple J winning "All For Believing', at the end of 2003. Although it charted in Australia it was the following year's Scar EP that propelled her into the spotlight, with the upbeat title track gaining extensive radio play. The full-length The Sound Of White featured a fuller production sound than on the EPs without dulling the impact of Higgins" forthright lyrics and earthy vocals. The album achieved multi-platinum status in Australia and won a string of ARIA Awards in 2004 and 2005.
