Matt Pond PA
Originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this US chamber pop band has been led from the outset by singer-songwriter Matt Pond. The titular leader had previously worked with indie rockers Mel's Rockpile, but after leaving his native New England for Philadelphia he decided to concentrate on a more pop-orientated approach with his new band. Matt Pond PA's self-released 1998 debut Deer Apartments also featured Josh Kramer (guitar/bass), Sean Byrne (drums), Jim Hostetter (cello) and Rosie McNamara-Jones (violin). Both this album and the 2000 follow-up, Measure, established the band's unusual take on indie pop, with extensive use of strings and horns featuring inviting the "chamber pop" tag. Pond's vocals, meanwhile, were uncannily similar to Robert Smith of UK indie stalwarts the Cure.

Matt Pond PA has under-gone some changes in the past year. New band members. The sound is a little different, a little "rockier". But a very good sound still. I love these guys. If you were a fan of their earlier stuff you should like how the band has grown and changed.
