Echobrain
Although the initial media attention around Echobrain centred on the fact that it was the first post-Metallica project of bass player Jason Newsted (b. 4 March 1963, Battle Creek, Michigan, USA), the band's main musical focal point soon became vocalist/guitarist Dylan Donkin (b. 16 May 1977, USA). Donkin and drummer Brian Sagrafena (b. 8 August 1978, USA) grew up together in the town of Millbrae, California, USA, and were both members of their school's jazz band. Sagrafena met Newsted in 1995 at a Super Bowl party thrown at the Metallica bass player's house, after Newsted heard the drummer (who was only 16 at the time) playing in a jam session. Sagrafena told Newsted about his friend Donkin, and over the next few years, the trio jammed regularly on a variety of musical styles at Newsted's home studio, the Chophouse, but it was not until a road trip to Baja, Mexico during 1999 that the trio decided to form a serious band. Taking the name Echobrain (which Donkin said originated from "the voices in my head"), the trio recorded an album's worth of songs penned around the time of the aforementioned Mexico trip.
