Dori Caymmi
b. 1943, Brazil. The son of Dorival Caymmi (once called Brazil's greatest living composer by Antonio Carlos Jobim), Dori has continued the family tradition of vivid songwriting, going on to achieve greater success outside of South America than either his parent or sister, Nana Caymmi. Although a gifted artist, he is probably better known throughout the USA for his extensive work as a producer and arranger than for his own albums, which see him invest native traditions with charming compositions highlighted by his own singing and guitar playing. His two internationally released albums have seen him alternate between English and Portuguese, with songs drawn from his own canon and those of his father ("Voc‚ J† Foi … Bahia" and "Pescaria" on Brasilian Serenata). He also joined with Dorival and Nana for a 1986 release on which the family covered each other's songs in solo and duet format. Of the three, it is Dori who has found his songs regularly covered by Western as well as Brazilian artists.
