Bobby Lyle
b. 1945, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from the age of six Lyle was taught piano by his mother who played church organ. He also played clarinet but favoured the piano and it was on this instrument that he began playing in local nightclubs while still a young teenager. Meanwhile, he was listening eagerly to jazz pianists on radio and record and where possible in person. He had no problem finding work and soon decided to drop out of college and turn to music full time. This was in 1964 and he mostly played locally until invited to tour with Young-Holt Unlimited, with which he made his first appearance on record. From the early 70s onwards, Lyle was active not only in jazz circles but also in rock. In 1974, he relocated to Los Angeles and there he worked with Sly And The Family Stone and Ronnie Laws, and made a 1974 recording that was released only in Japan. His first solo recording, The Genie for Capitol Records, came in 1977 and two other recordings quickly followed. He also accompanied Phyllis Hyman and Esther Phillips.
