The Charlatans
The first of San Francisco's "underground" rock acts, the Charlatans were formed in 1964 by George Hunter (autoharp, tambourine), Mike Wilhelm (guitar, vocals) and Richard Olsen (bass, clarinet, vocals). They were then augmented by pianist Michael Ferguson, whom Hunter had met in line at an unemployment office, and Sam Linde (drums). The incompatible Linde was replaced by Dan Hicks, by which time the band had adopted their striking visual image, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century western outlaws. Their waistcoats, stiff-necked collars, high boots and long hair so impressed the owner of the Red Dog Saloon, a bar in Virginia City, Nevada, that he booked them as his resident house band. It was here that the band honed their mlange of blues, folk, R&B and goodtime music, while Ferguson's artwork for their debut performance is recognized as America's first psychedelic poster.
