Lizz Wright
b. 22 January 1980, Hahira, Georgia, USA. Heavily promoted as the new hot voice of jazz, Wright's sudden appearance in 2002 brought a stronger, tougher feel to the pop jazz crossover music that had seen sky high album sales for several other young singers. Interestingly, Wright was the first black artist to step into this newly created, and potentially richly rewarding area of popular music. This allowed her to bring into the new genre a genuine seasoning of soul, gospel, and blues. Although the church played a key role in the musical genesis of many black singers throughout the twentieth century, its influence faded somewhat during the second half of the century, but with Wright it made a return.
