Leaves
Formed in Reykjav¡k, Iceland in 2001, and citing musical influences including the Beach Boys and Pink Floyd, Leaves came together from a nucleus of old friends, helping the band to gel quickly. Arnar Gudj¢nsson (vocals, piano, guitar), Hallur Hallsson (bass) and Arnar Olafsson (guitar/vocals) signed to newly formed label B-Unique Records, and released their debut, Breathe, in August 2002. Coupling the more melodic side of the Manic Street Preachers with Radiohead's melancholic groove, the album met with critical acclaim. Soon-to-be luminary Chris Martin from Coldplay came to their early gigs, and a support slot with the UK's Doves (to whom they were frequently compared) helped spread the word. Touring and festival appearances added to the band's groundswell of support, but after B-Unique was bought by Warner Brothers Records the band's label backing dried up, with Gudj¢nsson later stating "we'd been thrown into the music business and then it spat us out again."
