Jimmy Rogers
b. James A. Lane, 3 June 1924, Ruleville, Mississippi, USA, d. 19 December 1997, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Self-taught on both harmonica and guitar, Rogers began working at local house parties in his early teens. He then followed an itinerant path, performing in Mississippi and St. Louis, before moving to Chicago in 1939. Rogers frequently took work outside of music, but having played for tips on the city's famed Maxwell Street, began appearing in several clubs and bars. Although he worked as a accompanist with pianist Sunnyland Slim, Rogers established his reputation with the Muddy Waters Band, with whom he remained until 1960. The guitarist contributed to many of urban blues' finest performances, including "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Got My Mojo Workin'" and the seminal Muddy Waters At Newport. Rogers also enjoyed a moderately successful career in his own right. "That's All Right" (1950), credited to Jimmy Rogers And His Trio, featured Waters, Little Walter (harmonica) and Big Crawford (bass), and its popularity around the Chicago area engendered a new group, Jimmy Rogers And His Rocking Four.
