Jaguar Wright
b. Jacquelyn Wright, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Neo-soul singer Wright specializes in slinky and smooth soul ballads, having obviously studied her Ella Fitzgerald records thoroughly, although her sassy sensuality and vicious put-downs of ex-partners place her firmly as the new millennium's answer to Millie Jackson. Originating from the soul capital of America, Philadelphia, Wright grew up on gospel music (her father sang regularly at their local church), but owing to her family's strict religious background, had to sneak listening to R&B hitmakers such as Earth, Wind And Fire. Wright eventually formed her own group, Philly Blunts, which lasted for several years, before the singer began to hone her vocal skills playing clubs (and recording demos) in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia. She was eventually welcomed into the circle of renowned jazz-rappers the Roots, which featured the up-and-coming singer on "What You Want" and "The Lesson: Part III'. The Roots signed Wright to her own solo deal via their Motive Records imprint (distributed via MCA), resulting in the release of her debut, Denials Delusions And Decisions, in 2002. The album featured input by acclaimed rap producers such as Scott Storch, James Poyser, and the Roots" drummer, ?uestlove. Its commercial fortunes were helped by Wright's prominent appearance on Jay-Z's MTV Unplugged special.
