George Howard
b. 1956, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 22 March 1998, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Howard began learning music at the age of six, studying classical clarinet and also bassoon. In his early teens he began listening to jazz rock and soul, and was later introduced to jazz when his father played him records of Charlie "Bird" Parker and John Coltrane. By the 70s, now predominantly playing the tenor saxophone, he was gaining a localized reputation as a session player and through his playing with bands such as Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes and Blue Magic. At the end of the decade he went on tour with Grover Washington Jnr. and early in the 80s started making records under his own name. He found that his wide musical tastes attracted a similarly wide audience, stretching into the rock fusion edges of the form. Gradually, this extended to encompass soul and it was a smooth jazz soul mix that made his albums especially popular, a trend that was highlighted after his move to GRP Records. Howard made a number of visits to Africa, seeking to understand better the roots of his music. His dynamic playing style on tenor, alto and especially soprano saxophones found ideal expression in the potent depths of the soul style he preferred. His career was still on a distinct upswing when lymphoma cut short his life, just as the newly released Midnight Mood was being greeted with enthusiastic reviews.
