Gabor Szabo
b. 8 March 1936, Budapest, Hungary, d. 26 February 1982, Budapest, Hungary. Guitarist Szab¢ emigrated to the USA in 1956 to study at the Berklee College Of Music. He came to notice playing with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd. In the late 60s he began to explore a fusion of jazz with the kind of rock that was superficially influenced by Indian music. He introduced a number of Eastern styles into his playing. Although his Hungarian roots probably predisposed him towards an empathy with these elements, they were often seen as mere gimmicks, and he was generally dismissed by the critics. The eclectic albums made under his own name were very much of their time, and he was not an important figure, but in his work with Lloyd and Hamilton, he showed himself capable of warm-toned and subtle playing.
