Coverdale/Page
Following Whitesnake's headline appearance at the 1990 Donington Festival, and the comparatively poor sales of Slip Of The Tongue, vocalist David Coverdale (b. 22 September 1951, Saltburn-By-The Sea, North Yorkshire, England) put his band on ice, and had all but retired. Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page (b. James Patrick Page, 9 January 1944, Heston, Middlesex, England) was, however, searching for a singer with whom to work, and Coverdale was suggested by his booking agent during a conversation with Page's manager. The pair met in New York in March 1991, and quickly gelled on personal and professional levels. Their first attempt at writing together produced an album track, "Absolution Blues", and the duo began writing and recording their debut, enlisting the services of Heart drummer Denny Carmassi and bass players Jorge Casas and Ricky Phillips in the studio. The partnership was viewed rather cynically by sections of the music press as a corporate rock supergroup, and was subject to much speculation on all fronts - "Legends" was rumoured as a possible band name for some time - before the appearance of the simply titled Coverdale Page. The album evidenced the duo rediscovering their blues rock roots, and was widely regarded as the finest work produced by either for some time. Majestic ballads such as "Take Me For A Little While" and the mellow "Take A Look At Yourself" sat comfortably amid the thunderous hard rock of "Shake My Tree", "Waiting On You" and "Pride And Joy", while the atmospheric delivery of "Over Now" evoked the epic air of the Zeppelin classic, "Kashmir". The album reached the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic, and Carmassi's Bonhamesque performance ensured that his services were retained for the live band, along with bass player Guy Pratt and ex-David Lee Roth keyboard player Brett Tuggle. However, the band was unable to arrange a financially viable world tour, with promoters sceptical of their drawing power in a poor market for traditional heavy rock, and without that support, album sales dwindled. They played six shows in Japan in December 1993, successfully mixing Whitesnake and Zeppelin material with Coverdale Page originals, but these performances were the band's swansong. It seems unlikely that the main protagonists will work together again, especially in view of Page's reunification with Robert Plant and the revival of Whitesnake.
