Blue Murder
This project was masterminded by ex-Thin Lizzy and Tygers Of Pan Tang guitarist John Sykes (b. 29 July 1959, Reading, Berkshire, England), after he left Whitesnake in 1988. Enlisting the services of Tony Franklin (ex-the Firm) on bass and Cozy Powell on drums (the latter quickly replaced by Carmine Appice), Sykes decided to record as a three-piece outfit. This followed a long and fruitless search for a suitable vocalist to front the band. The material included on their self-titled debut drew heavily on Sykes' Whitesnake legacy, but featured more extended compositions, with sophisticated arrangements and lengthy instrumental breaks, aided by session keyboardist Nik Green. The album was criticized upon its release, perhaps prematurely and unfairly, as it did contain a number of competent songs.
