Angels
During the late 70s and early 80s, the Angels, formed in 1975, were Australia's most successful rock band, enjoying massive record sales for both singles and albums, and also having the distinction of being the top live act in the country. The band was based around the brothers John (guitar) and Rick Brewster (guitar) with Doc Neeson (vocals), who had played together in jug and rock 'n' roll revival bands such as the Keystone Angels in Adelaide since 1971. The line-up was completed by Chris Bailey (bass) and Graham Bidstrup (drums). The Angels toured incessantly, culminating in an extended tour of the USA where they were known as Angel City. Their no-nonsense, go-getting rock was not particularly innovative, but they worked hard to captivate their audiences at every opportunity, writing lyrics that were concise and anthemic. However, the band made little headway in America and, as with so many others, their audience in Australia tired of them, ignoring subsequent album releases.
