The Bad Plus
Formed in 2000, the origins of the Bad Plus predate this by many years. In 1984, drummer David King (b. 8 June 1970, Minnesota, USA) heard bass player Reid Anderson (b. Minnesota, USA) singing with a junior high school rock band. Five years later, Anderson and pianist Ethan Iverson (b. 11 February 1973, Menomonie, Wisconsin, USA) were playing free jazz at various Midwest venues. A year later, the three first played together but it was another decade before the group hardened into its distinctive form. In the meantime, Iverson worked as musical director for the Mark Morris Dance Group. He and Anderson had relocated to New York, while King remained based in Minneapolis.
